4 Unique Ways to Use Barn Doors

Modern farmhouse design is one of the most enduring aesthetics of the past decade. A major element to emerge from this trend is the use of interior sliding barn doors, which are inspired by the rolling doors traditionally used on barns. Because the doors are hung from overhead tracks, they are most often used in en suite bathrooms, pantries, dens and other cramped spaces without room for a traditional swing door.

As barn doors became more popular, they branched out beyond the rustic farmhouse style and are now used in a variety of different home styles, including modern. They can also do much more than separate rooms—you can use an easy-to-install Masonite Sliding Barn Door Kit with Hardware anywhere you want to hide something, create separation or add a unique focal point.

Here are four unique ways to use a barn door.

1. Cloffice

A “cloffice” refers to a closet that has been converted into a mini home office. The concept was popularized during the early days of the pandemic. As many families began working and learning from home, they quickly realized that sharing a cluttered kitchen counter or breakfast nook simply wouldn’t cut it. However, many didn’t have square footage to spare for a dedicated home office. Thus, the cloffice was born.

When creating your cloffice, you may have to remove traditional swing doors to make room for the desk and other supplies. Without doors, the office furniture can look out of place with your existing décor or, worse yet, make it nearly impossible to separate your work from your personal life. For example, if your cloffice is in your bedroom, your work computer might be the last thing you see when heading to bed at night. Instead of winding down, your brain may start replaying all the meetings from earlier in the day and making mental notes of your action items—which won’t make for a very restful night’s sleep.

A sliding barn door helps keep your home cloffice neatly hidden while saving space. Plus, it’s easy to customize the look of your barn door to complement your space. Choose a sliding barn door with a simple panel design like the Masonite Lincoln Park for a more contemporary look or go for a more rustic style to add visual interest.

2. Reading Nook

Everyone needs a quiet space to focus or relax. If you don’t have a dedicated office or study area, create your own private oasis with a reading nook. This harmonious little hideaway is the perfect spot to get lost in a good book, draw, study or simply escape household hustle and bustle.

Your reading nook should provide some privacy without feeling totally closed off from the rest of your home. If you have a built-in window seat or walls with unique angles, a sliding barn door is the perfect solution to conceal the space. Choose a design with glass like the Masonite 3 Equal Lite with Frosted Glass to keep the small space light and bright, even when the door is closed.

3. Home Bar

A home bar is a great feature for entertaining—but with mixers, glassware and utensils, the space can get cluttered quickly. It can also be an unwelcome distraction if the bar is situated in a multi-use space that may also be used for working out, playing or other activities where you obviously don’t want cocktails to be the focus.

Use a sliding barn door to hide your home bar from view when not in use. This works particularly well for small enclaves within walls, butler’s pantries or closets that have been converted into home bars. Be sure to select a barn door design with no glass like the Masonite Melrose Sliding Barn Door Kit so that the area stays totally out of sight.

4. Entertainment Center

With dangling cables, blinking routers and a host of other connections and gadgets, entertainment centers can sometimes be an eyesore. This multi-media hodgepodge can also look oddly out of place if you have classic or rustic living room décor. Media hutches aren’t a very good solution—they are bulky, outdated and many don’t even fit modern television screens.

Try a sliding barn door to hide your media center while complementing the rest of your décor. The Masonite 1 Panel Ash Gray Z-Bar is the perfect choice to add a touch of texture in a minimalist space or harmonize with mixed materials in a more eclectic design concept.
